UNDP adopts an area-based approach to socio-economic development with a focus on inclusive participation and community empowerment. Through the Heart of Amman Programme, UNDP is working on building resilience and inclusive societies by promoting social cohesion and citizen participation, providing sustainable livelihood opportunities and facilitating broad stakeholder engagement in development.
The Heart of Amman Programme seeks to provide resilience-based development solutions for local economic recovery, including green economy opportunities, tourism promotion, entrepreneurship and businesses development. Fundamentally, the Programme embraces a mid- to long-term approach to self-reliance and local area development, including refugees, migrants, and women to ensure no one is left behind.
Through the multiple phases of the Programme, UNDP continues to expand the scale of its partnerships through strategic engagement with key stakeholders including with government, civil society organizations, and communities with the aim of expanding and maximizing the impact of interventions. Activities under the Heart of Amman Programme are interlinked and build on and complement government efforts to improve living conditions, enhance social integration and create sustainable income generating opportunities.
At the core of the Programme are community led initiatives which employ community-based approaches to addressing challenges by empowering and mobilizing communities to contribute to the development and advancement of their neighborhoods. The initiatives adopt a participatory and citizen- centric approach which promotes inclusive economic integration and helps bridge differences among the diverse demographic groups residing in Amman.
